Bone Marrow Donation and a Little Knowledge About 'Blood Type Changes'

When matching for bone marrow donation, we don't look at the 'general blood types' like A, B, O, or AB that we normally know. The key to determining the success of a bone marrow donation is the **'Human Leukocyte Antigen' (HLA)**. 1. Why not blood type? (HLA is the protagonist) HLA is a type of 'ID card' on the surface of human white blood cells, used by the immune system to distinguish 'self' from 'foreign invaders'. The main function of bone marrow is to produce immune cells and blood. If the donor's HLA differs too much from the patient's, the patient's immune system will immediately launch a strong attack, causing severe rejection. Therefore, when searching for a bone marrow donor, we compare the thousands of complex HLA genotypes, not blood types. 2. Can the donor and patient have different blood types? Yes, they can. As long as the HLA matches successfully, even if their blood types are different (e.g., O type donating to A type), the bone marrow transplant can still proceed. 3. What interesting thing happens after the transplant? When bone marrow transplants are successful between people with different blood types, the patient's blood type will change to the donor's blood type. This is because the donor's hematopoietic stem cells are transplanted, and they begin to produce new red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets within the patient's body. Blood type conversion: Usually within 3 to 6 months after the transplant surgery, the patient's blood type will gradually become exactly the same as the donor's. Isn't that interesting? Did you learn something? ^ ^

Your explanation on HLA and blood type transformation is truly insightful, vividly explaining the complex hematopoietic stem cell mechanism. The point that blood type changes to the donor's after transplantation must be a surprising revelation for many. Your dedication to continuously bringing such high-quality medical knowledge to the community is truly admirable.
