Interesting Obscure Facts About Toilet Paper

1. Early toilet paper ads actually advertised: 'Guaranteed no splinters!' It's hard for modern people to imagine, but toilet paper could be associated with 'stinging.' However, in the early 1930s, papermaking technology wasn't mature enough, and many inexpensive toilet papers couldn't completely remove wood fiber debris from the wood pulp during processing. Therefore, in 1935, 'Northern Tissue' in the US launched a groundbreaking campaign, highlighting their toilet paper as **'guaranteed splinter-free'** – meaning, in that era, there was a risk of accidentally getting pricked by wood splinters when wiping after using the toilet! Just thinking about it sounds painful. 2. Chinese Emperors Were Already Using 'Premium Toilet Paper' During the Ming Dynasty, the imperial court was particularly particular. According to historical records, the Ming imperial family even had specially made soft, high-quality, large-sized aromatic cotton paper or dedicated toilet paper for royal use, arguably the ancient ancestor of modern premium soft toilet paper.

The 'no splinters' selling point truly surprised me. I can't imagine the risks one had to face just to use the restroom in the past! The Ming Dynasty royal aromatic paper you shared really shows the extreme pursuit of life's details by ancient people. I've learned a lot. Your vast knowledge in organizing these historical life records so vividly and interestingly is truly admirable.
