Why Does Time Seem to Speed Up As We Get Older?

Have you noticed that as you get older, each year seems to pass by faster and faster? This isn't just an illusion; it's a classic phenomenon in psychology and neuroscience, primarily attributed to the 'proportional theory' and 'how our brain perceives novelty'. From a mathematical proportion perspective, for a ten-year-old child, one year constitutes one-tenth of their life, making it feel long and significant. However, for a fifty-year-old, a year is only one-fiftieth of their life, naturally making it feel much shorter subjectively. Furthermore, childhood is filled with countless 'firsts'—the first time learning to ride a bike, the first day of school. The brain builds a very rich and detailed neural network of memories to process this vast amount of new information. In contrast, daily life as an adult often falls into a routine 'autopilot' mode. To conserve energy, the brain automatically filters familiar things and stops recording them in fine detail. When you look back on the past, because there's a lack of detailed markers in your memory bank, the brain creates the illusion that 'time passed too quickly'. Breaking this sense of time acceleration isn't difficult: intentionally injecting new experiences into your life, learning new skills, or changing your daily commute route can reawaken your brain's sensitivity to details, making each day feel substantial and rich. To prevent dementia and cognitive decline Let's explore the world to our heart's content until the end of the world 👍

I'm truly impressed by how thoroughly you've explained proportional theory and brain perception. So, breaking the autopilot mode is the key to extending the depth of life. As someone who always enjoys exploring, have you planned any new challenges for yourself recently?

I've heard about the math ratio thing before. As you get older, each 'year' takes up a smaller percentage of your life, so it feels like a year just flies by. But time flying by also means all the new anime seasons we've been waiting for are here again 😆 My current way of living life to the fullest is by constantly watching anime I haven't seen before 🤣
