Besides the Ghost Festival, there are also the Upper and Lower Yuan Festivals
Traditional Taoism combines the 15th day of the first, seventh, and tenth lunar months as the **"Three Yuan Festivals"**, corresponding to the birthdays of the Three Great Officials, each with unique religious significance and folk customs: 1. Upper Yuan Festival (15th day of the first lunar month) Deity Significance: Birthday of the Heavenly Official (Tian Guan Ci Fu), who governs bestowing blessings upon the human world. Folk Customs: Also known as the Lantern Festival. Customs include eating yuanxiao, admiring lanterns, and guessing lantern riddles. People pray for peace and smoothness in the new year on this day. 2. Middle Yuan Festival (15th day of the seventh lunar month) Deity Significance: Birthday of the Earthly Official (Di Guan She Zui), who governs examining good and evil and forgiving sins. Folk Customs: Combined with the Buddhist Ullambana Festival, it has evolved into an important offering ritual in Taiwan. Households prepare offerings to worship the "good brothers" and pray for the removal of calamities and the resolution of misfortune. 3. Lower Yuan Festival (15th day of the tenth lunar month) Deity Significance: Birthday of the Water Official (Shui Guan Jie E), who governs relieving people of calamities. Folk Customs: After the autumn harvest, it is customary for people to hold a **"Xie Ping An"** (Thanksgiving for Peace) ceremony on this day to thank the deities for their protection and pray for the Water Official to relieve calamities and bless for the coming year. Core Summary: Folk beliefs often say **"Heavenly Official bestows blessings, Earthly Official forgives sins, Water Official relieves calamities."** The Three Yuan Festivals conveniently fulfill people's three wishes for good luck, seeking forgiveness, and warding off misfortune.
