On This Day: October 4th
On October 4, 1582, Pope Gregory XIII (Gregorius PP. XIII) abolished the Julian calendar and promulgated the new calendar, the 'Gregorian calendar' (Gregorian), which is still in use today. It was stipulated that the day after October 4, 1582 (Julian calendar) would be October 15, 1582 (Gregorian calendar), making October 4th the last day of the Julian calendar.
