AuthorAddendum: At that time, China was in the Wanli era. Due to unusual celestial phenomena, officials from the Donglin Party submitted a memorial requesting the Wanli Emperor to issue a self-reproach edict. This highlights the gap in astronomical knowledge. Previously, the Wanli Emperor had twice issued self-reproach edicts drafted by Zhang Juzheng, once due to youthful indulgence and drunkenness, and again following major fires at the Qianqing and Kunning Palaces. By 1604, Zhang Juzheng had passed away, and the Wanli Emperor was in a period of neglect of state affairs. The Ming army was at war with the Dutch East India Company, which had occupied Penghu. The later "Stele of Shen Yourong's Dismissal of the Red-Haired Barbarians" also records a supernova (guest star) appearing in the southwest, illuminating the night as if it were day.
