Horror Short Story | The Clothesline

Shen Jing lived in a studio apartment without a balcony, so he had to hang his clothes to dry on a clothesline outside his window. When he moved in, there was an old wooden clothespin already on the line. He casually hung his own clothes, leaving the clip there. One day, when he went to collect his laundry, he found an extra piece of clothing. It was a small, white dress, like one a little girl would wear. It was hanging on the very end, swaying gently in the wind. He thought it might have fallen from upstairs and placed it on the windowsill, thinking the owner would come looking for it. The next day, the dress was back on the clothesline, held by that old wooden clip. Feeling uneasy, he threw the dress in the trash. The next morning, the dress was hanging on the clothesline again, still with the same wooden clip. This time, the dress was wet, as if it had just been washed. Shen Jing removed the wooden clip and threw it away along with the dress. That night, as he was sleeping, he heard a faint tapping sound outside his window. He pulled back the curtain to look, but there was nothing on the clothesline. Yet, the line was swaying as if someone had just jumped off it. He closed and locked the window. The next morning, when he opened the window to collect his clothes, he found the dress hanging on the clothesline. The wooden clip was holding it tightly, and the hem of the skirt fluttered in the breeze. Next to it was a small note, tucked into the clip: "If you remove the clip, I have nowhere to live. If you remove it again, I'll move in." Shen Jing froze. He looked down at his own clothes. His t-shirt from yesterday was gone, and only the dress remained on the line. He didn't dare touch anything else, closed the window, and even drew the curtains. That night, while he was showering,

Horror Short Story | The Alarm Clock

Chen Cheng found an old alarm clock in the drawer of his bedside table in his rented room. The hands were stuck at 3:07 AM, and the casing was a bit rusty, but it looked like it could still work. He replaced the battery, and the hands started moving. He set the time correctly, scheduling it to ring at 7 AM. The next morning, the alarm clock didn't ring. He overslept and was late. Thinking the clock was broken, he pressed the night-light button and discovered the time was stuck at 3:07 AM. He manually set the hands to the correct time and reset it. The next morning, it was stuck at 3:07 AM again. He found it strange, even after changing the battery, the result was the same. No matter how he adjusted it, the hands would always return to 3:07 AM the next day. He searched for the model online and found it was an old model discontinued over a decade ago. He searched for related discussions and came across an old forum post titled: 'Help, my alarm clock keeps stopping at 3:07 AM.' Clicking on it, the poster said they bought a second-hand alarm clock whose hands would stop at the same time every day. Feeling something was wrong, they investigated the previous owner and discovered that the previous owner had died at 3:07 AM. Below the post, someone replied: 'That's the time of the dead. The clock is warning you not to be awake at that hour.' Chen Cheng was stunned and closed the webpage. He decided to throw the alarm clock away. That night, he put the alarm clock in a trash bag and threw it into the large dumpster downstairs. After returning home, he fell into a deep sleep. In the middle of the night, he heard a ringing sound. It was very loud, right by his ear. He opened his eyes, and the alarm clock was sitting on his bedside table. The hands pointed to 3:07 AM, and the ringing continued. He reached out to turn it off, but found the button wouldn't press down. The back of the alarm clock

Horror Short Story | The Potted Plant

Shen Li bought a small potted plant from the flower market. The shop owner said it was easy to care for, didn't need frequent watering, and would thrive just by being left alone. She placed it on her desk and glanced at it every morning when she woke up. There wasn't much change. One day, she found a small fallen leaf next to the plant. She picked it up and threw it away. The next day, another leaf had fallen in the exact same spot. Feeling strange, she dug into the soil of the pot and found a small piece of paper buried within. She dug it out. The paper had a name written on it. It wasn't her name. She searched online and discovered the name belonged to the previous tenant of her studio apartment. When she moved in, the landlord had mentioned the previous tenant had moved out, but didn't elaborate. She put the paper back into the soil, pretending she hadn't seen it. The next day, the plant had grown taller by a segment. It had more leaves, and their color had deepened. She felt something was off, but couldn't pinpoint what. That night, she dreamed of a woman sitting at her desk, looking down at the potted plant, her fingers gently stroking the leaves. The woman looked up, smiled at her, and her lips silently formed the words: 'Thank you for watering me.' Shen Li woke up with a start and walked to her desk. The plant had grown even taller, reaching her knees. The soil was damp, but she hadn't watered it at all for the past few days. She decided to move the plant to the balcony. As she moved it, she discovered a photo stuck to the bottom of the pot, half-covered by soil. She wiped it clean. The photo showed a woman happily holding a potted plant. The background was her studio apartment. The back of the photo had a date, from two years ago. And another line of text: 'If one day I'm no longer here, please continue to take care of it for me. It will remember me.' Shen Li froze, then turned to look at the balcony.

Horror Short Story | Elevator

The building where Shen Jing lived had two elevators, one old and one new. The old one often malfunctioned, so he was used to taking the new one. One morning, rushing to work, the new elevator was stuck on the top floor and wouldn't come down. Impatient, he pressed the button for the old elevator. The door opened. The interior was dimly lit, with old carpet on the floor and a musty smell. He stepped inside and pressed the button for the first floor. The elevator went down and stopped at the third floor. The door opened, but there was no one outside. He pressed the close button, the door shut, and it continued downwards. It stopped again at the second floor. Still no one. He felt something was wrong and repeatedly mashed the close button. The door closed, and this time it went straight to the first floor. The door opened, and he stepped out. He looked back at the old elevator. A person stood inside, with their back to him, wearing a gray coat. He froze. There was definitely no one there a moment ago. The next day, he took the new elevator. But the old elevator's door opened by itself. There was no one inside, but every floor button on the panel was lit up. As if someone had pressed all the floors at once. He didn't dare to ride it and took the stairs down. For the next few days, the old elevator door would often open by itself. Sometimes in the middle of the night, sometimes when he was walking down the hallway. It was always empty inside, but the button panel was always lit. One day, he worked overtime until very late. When he got home, both elevators were stuck on the top floor. Not wanting to wait, he stepped into the old elevator and pressed the fifth-floor button. The elevator went up and stopped at the second floor. The door opened, but the hallway lights were out, plunging it into darkness. He pressed the close button, but the door didn't move. A voice came from the darkness, very softly: "You pressed the fifth floor, but this elevator only goes up to the fourth." Shen Jing froze.

Horror Short Story | The Umbrella Stand

Shen Jing's company had a shared umbrella stand by the entrance for employees to store their umbrellas on rainy days. He owned a blue folding umbrella that he'd used for years. Its ribs were a bit bent, but it was still functional. One day, during a heavy downpour, he placed his umbrella in the stand. When he left work, however, his umbrella was gone. He assumed a colleague had mistakenly taken it. The next day, he asked in the company group chat, but no one responded. He had to buy a new one from a convenience store, a black one. The following day, it rained again. He put his new umbrella in the stand. When he left work, the new umbrella was still there, but next to it was a blue folding umbrella. It was his original one. He picked it up to inspect it. The ribs were still bent, and there was a small stain on the fabric, exactly like his old one. He found it strange but didn't think much of it, taking both umbrellas home. For the next few days, he brought his new umbrella to work and placed it in the stand. When he left, there would always be an old umbrella added to the stand. Each one was different – red, yellow, plaid – but they all shared the same characteristic: bent ribs and a stained fabric. He took these umbrellas home, and his balcony began to fill up with over a dozen of them. One day, out of curiosity, he flipped over the inside of one of the umbrellas. A name was written on the underside of the fabric in a marker pen. He checked the company directory and found that the name belonged to an employee who had left the company five years ago. He looked at the other umbrellas. Each one had a name written inside, all belonging to employees who had left in different years. He searched one of the names online and found an old news article. That employee had been hit by a car outside the company five years ago and died on the way to the hospital. It had been raining heavily that day, and the employee was holding a blue folding umbrella. Shen Jing froze and continued searching for the other names. He found information for each one.

Horror Flash Fiction | The Key

Shen Jing moved into a new place. The landlord gave him three keys: one for the main door, one for his room, and a small, silver, slightly old one. "What's this one for?" he asked. The landlord replied, "The storage room at the end of the hall. There's nothing inside, you don't need to worry about it." Shen Jing nodded and put the three keys on a keyring together. The first night, he was falling asleep when he heard a noise in the hallway, like someone turning a doorknob. He thought it was another neighbor and didn't think much of it. The next morning, he found the key to his room had fallen off the keyring and was under his bed. He picked it up and reattached it. The second night, he heard footsteps in the hallway again, stopping at his door. He looked through the peephole, but the hallway was empty. The doorknob turned halfway, as if someone tried to open the door, realized it was locked, and let go. He looked down at his keyring. The main door key was gone. He searched the floor for a long time and finally found it under the doormat outside his door. The third night, he decided not to sleep and sat in the living room, staring at the door. At two in the morning, the doorknob turned again. This time, he rushed over and pulled the door open— The hallway was empty, except for the storage room door at the end, which was ajar. He walked over and pushed the storage room door open. It was dark inside, with only an old wooden chest. On top of the chest was a set of keys, identical to the ones he had. But this set had three keys. His set only had one left. He picked up the keys from the chest and found a line of text engraved on the small key: "The storage room door is locked from the inside." He froze and turned to look at the storage room door. It was slowly closing, and a key was inserted into the doorknob. It was his main door key.

Horror Short Story | The Balcony

Shen Li's rental apartment had a small balcony. The landlord said the previous tenant left a few plants that could survive without care. After she moved in, she found a dead cactus in the corner of the balcony. The pot was small, the soil was cracked and dry, and the cactus had shriveled up, looking completely dead. She wanted to throw it away, but every time she picked up the pot, it felt heavy, as if someone was pulling it from below. She tried a few times and gave up, deciding to just ignore it. One night, she heard a sound from the balcony, like someone watering plants. She opened the balcony door, but no one was there. Yet, the soil in the cactus pot was wet. She thought water was dripping from the apartment above. She looked up, but the lights were off upstairs. The next morning, the cactus had grown a little taller. She was sure it was only thumb-sized yesterday, but now it had grown by half a finger joint. She started paying attention. Every night, she heard watering sounds from the balcony, and the cactus grew taller each day. After three weeks, it had grown to her waist height, and its shape had changed; it no longer looked like a cactus. It resembled a human figure. It had a head, shoulders, and arms, but no face. Its entire body was covered in fine thorns, and its color was dark green. She couldn't stand it anymore and decided to carry the pot downstairs to throw it away. This time, she could lift it. She hugged the pot and walked downstairs, throwing it into the dumpster. She slept very well that night. There were no sounds in the middle of the night, and the cactus was gone. The next morning, she walked to the balcony, and the pot was back. The cactus stood in the pot, a head taller than her, with all its thorns retracted. Instead, it had grown facial features. Eyes, a nose, a mouth. The features slowly began to move, and the mouth opened, emitting a faint sound, as if trying to speak. Shen Li felt so

Horror Short Story | The Doorbell

Chen Cheng's doorbell had been broken for a long time. It wouldn't ring when pressed. He was too lazy to fix it, and friends always contacted him by phone anyway. One night, he heard the doorbell ring. A very short ring, like someone pressed it lightly and let go. He thought he misheard and rolled over to go back to sleep. The next night, the doorbell rang again. This time he was sure he wasn't mistaken. He went to the door and looked through the peephole. The hallway was empty. He opened the door, and a piece of paper was on the floor outside: "The doorbell is fixed." He found it baffling. He looked up at the doorbell; it was free of dust, as if someone had wiped it. He reached out and pressed it, but it didn't ring. After closing the door, he went back to bed. The doorbell rang again. This time, three short, consecutive rings. He rushed to the door and pulled it open. The hallway was still empty. But there was another note on the floor: "You pressed it, so I came." Chen Cheng froze. He looked down at the doorbell. He had indeed pressed it just now, and it hadn't rung. He took a step back, closed the door, and locked it. The doorbell rang again, this time long and continuous, as if someone was holding it down. He didn't dare open the door and hid in his room. The doorbell sound lasted for a full minute before stopping. The next morning, he went out to work and found the doorbell was gone. Only two wires were left hanging on the wall. He breathed a sigh of relief, thinking it was over. When he returned home that evening, the doorbell had been reinstalled. It was brand new, silver, with a clear fingerprint on the button. He reached out to press it. The moment his finger touched the button, the doorbell rang on its own. A long ring, as if someone from inside was holding it down. He snatched his hand back in shock. The doorbell

Horror Short Story | The Remote

Chen Cheng bought a TV remote from a second-hand store. It looked exactly like his old one, but was much cheaper. His original remote's buttons were getting sticky, so he thought he'd replace it. He got home, put in batteries, and it worked. But he noticed an extra button at the bottom, unlabeled, and unresponsive when pressed. He didn't think much of it and continued using it. That night, he fell asleep watching TV. He woke up in the middle of the night to find the TV off and the remote on the floor. He picked it up and saw the extra button glowing faintly. He pressed it. The TV didn't turn on. But he heard a sound from the next apartment, like someone falling off a bed. He was puzzled; he was the only one living on this floor. The next day, he asked the landlord if anyone lived next door. The landlord said no, that unit was a storage room. That night, he pressed the button again. This time, he heard footsteps from the next apartment, slowly approaching the wall towards him. He pressed his ear against the wall. The footsteps stopped. Instead, there were three light taps on the wall. He didn't dare respond and threw the remote into a drawer. The next morning, he found the remote back on his desk, the extra button still glowing. He picked up the remote and saw a small line of text next to the button, as if carved with a knife: "Each time you press it, the person next door gets a little closer to you." He froze. Just as he was about to put it down, the button lit up on its own, as if someone had pressed something from the other side. This time, the sound he heard wasn't from next door. It was from the closet behind him. The closet door slowly creaked open, revealing darkness within. From the darkness, a hand reached out, holding
